Iowa State Love Your Melon Crew participated in the annual Love Your Melon Day on Monday. Iowa State was one of hundreds of crews from colleges across the nation that visited children with life-threatening diseases in hospitals to give free beanies and smiles to children undergoing treatment.

Love Your Melon Day is all about honoring the amazing children who fight every day for their life. Love Your Melon uses this day to celebrate their courage and hope to find a cure for childhood cancer. Over 11,000 crew members set out to their local hospitals to visit kids and 10,000 beanies were handed out.

The Iowa State Love Your Melon Crew set out to Mercy Medical Center and Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa to visit kids. Members from the crew went dressed in bright, colorful superhero costumes.

The crew visited many children at Mercy Medical Center as well. The ages of the kids they saw ranged from nine months to 16.

Members of the crew walked on the floors that held pediatric patients, stopped to spend time with them and give each patient a beanie. Some patients were just in to get their tonsils taken out or surgery on their broken arm, but many were there for treatment or chemo.

The floor that crew members handed out beanies and smiles to was full. There were no open spots for more kids that day.

Some members went to Blank’s Children Hospital and spent their day coloring and visiting with kids going through treatment. The time that the Iowa State Love Your Melon Crew got to spend with the kids was short but left a lasting impact on them and helped them realize why they are a part of that organization.

Happy Love Your Melon Day!
